This separate room in the lowest level of the home is designated as a cigar tasting space. Three exhaust ceiling units vent directly outside. French doors mounted with out-swing from the room ensure the slight negative pressure of the room, when in use, keep a secure seal. Return air adequately flows from the main house further preventing back-draft odors. In every smoking room installed, the non-tasters of the home are completely satisfied that no hint of cigar smoke or linkering odor escapes into the rest of the dwelling. This is a win-win for the descerning taster.
The temperature and humidity controlled humidor has its ceiling and shelving built from SPANISH CEDAR timber, planed down to dimensional lumber. This type of wood emits a slightly spicy scent from natural oils that act as a pest control for imported cigars, ensuring the collection is protected. The shelves are designed and installed for maximum air flow around the cigar boxes.
The walk-in wine cellarette has racking built from AFRICAN MAHOGANY which is the wood of choice for collectors thanks to its beautiful color retention, its resistance to warping, and its inherent resistance to moisture and temperature changes. The wall mounted wine chiller vents to a separate space.
The airtight 10mm clear glass walls encapsulating both the humidor and the wine cellar, are each black metal framed four-section entrance units, custom designed for each space. The doors are hinged to open both inwardly and outwardly.

Designed as a two room cellar to house an extensive collection of international wines, this space is temperature and humidity controlled using TWO through-the-wall chillers which vent into an adjacent utility room. Long term wine storage requires a consistent temperature as near 13 degrees celcius (55 degrees farenheit) as possible, with consistency the key element. This large space needed two chillers to accomplish that goal. The external grade wooden entrance door ensures the thermal seal from the rest of the home. Over 8000 pieces of African Mahogany were carefully measured and cut, then assembled with precision, to create the racking.
The ideal wine cellar needs to be built like a large refridgerator, with considerations for insulation and moisture at the walls, the floor, and the ceiling. Spray foam insulation was used in this project, but proper batt insulation can be used instead of spray to avoid odors. Batt insulation is also used to block noise transfer. The walls hail from moisture-resistant drywall designed for high-humidity areas to prevent mold and water damage. Installing moisture resistant drywall needs extra precision to ensure the drywall screw does not crush the material nor stick out.
The floors, once precisely leveled, were adorned with travertine-look ceramic tiles. Real stone tile, while beautiful, is discouraged on modern wine cellar floors because of the chance of staining from the high humidity and the chance of acidic spills.
